Welcome to Swang Pony Centre (SPC), we have been established since January 2009. We teach children to ride from 4yrs to adult’s maximum 12 stone. The owner Elaine Foster BHSAI has over 25 years experience of riding / owning horses & her husband Ray has done all the construction of arenas / facilities. Since opening, the riding school has gone from strength to strength achieving the following accreditations; Pony Club Centre, BHS approved riding school, British Riding Club Centre, Accredited RDA Accessibility Mark Centre & Approved Changing Lives Through Horses Centre.
In addition to Elaine the other members of staff at Swang Pony Centre are:
Lizzie Jones, Roisin Hughes, Emma Davey, Tegan Chatwin, Beth Davis & Holly Foster.
We offer the following types of lessons (Monday-Saturdays):
1hr group – maximum 4 riders of similar ability
1/2hr individual – one to one lesson with an instructor, subject to availability
1/2hr shared – 2 riders sharing 1/2hr ideal for young beginners.
Taking in consideration the welfare of our ponies, for Group lessons on Swang Ponies: Group lessons of 3-4 riders will remain as 1 hour, Group lessons booked with 2 riders lesson will become a semi private of 45mins, Group lesson booked with 1 rider will become a private lesson of 30mins. Lesson fee will remain the same as original group lesson fee.
Please note our fees policy; failure to attend or a cancellation within 24 hours of a booked lesson, means the lesson fee is still payable. The current price list is displayed in the tack room. No refunds are given unless lesson / event cancelled by Swang Pony Centre. For payment of lesson fees we can accept cash or our bank details can be supplied by request.
In the tack room is a toilet, sink, tea & coffee making facilities. You are welcome to help your self to make a cuppa, whilst watching a lesson. Smoking (including E Cigarette) is not permitted on the premises.
In the unfortunate event of a fire, our fire assembly point is next to the arena in the customer parking area.
To ensure lessons run to schedule, please can we ask all riders to arrive in plenty of time before their lesson to get suited & booted (hat / body protector on, long hair tied back, gloves on & toilet stop!) so we are all ready to go & mount at the booked lesson time. We would really appreciate if the grown up taxi’s could help their small riders to get ready. Thank you in advance for your co operation.
Riders are welcome to bring their own horse / pony for a lesson. The indoor arena is available to hire for private use at a mutually convenient time.
If you wish to take photos / videos at SPC, please ask your instructor for permission first, so all parents, guardians & riders are in agreeance.
At SPC we have the following teaching ponies:
Bachen – 14.2hh Liver chestnut welsh gelding. Bachen is sweet chap, very much a ‘mummy’s boy. He can be slightly whip shy, so you may not be allowed to carry a whip whilst riding him. He used to a driving pony as well so he is voice responsive.
Blue – 14.3hh Skewbald (Blue & white) Irish cob gelding. Blue is an affectionate boy whom has originally hunted in Ireland & enjoys his jumping. He is very willing to have a go, whilst a laid back personality.
Smartie – 13.2hh Chestnut welsh gelding. Smartie is a good all rounder & a fun pony to ride, he can be grumpy whilst you tighten his girth, so please be gentle.
Marley – 13hh New forest x bay gelding. Marley is a confident pony whom is a quick learner & has plenty of potential. He enjoys jumping & is very workmanlike.
Daisy – 14hh Piebald cob mare. A forward going little mare whom is willing to please.
Ernie – 14.1hh Piebald cob gelding. A forward going boy whom likes to think he knows best at times. Enjoys jumping & hacking.
Billie – 14.2hh Piebald cob x gelding, a laid back chap whom is the latest edition to our team of ponies. Has previous experience at a local equine college
We have riding hats & body protectors to borrow free of charge, so there is no need to purchase any equipment prior to riding. All we ask is that rider’s wear sturdy footwear with a small heal, no trainers, sandals or crocs. Hair tied up & all clothing fastened. If a rider is unsuitably dressed for a lesson, the instructor is within their right not to teach but the lesson fee is still payable. Any doubts regarding suitable clothing / footwear please ask your instructor

The selected rider/helper will receive a special rosette for their achievement.
As well as teaching, we also host fun events such as clear round show jumping, pony fun days, training days, rallies hacking, & pony club camp etc. These events are advertised in our monthly newsletters, posters in the office, on Facebook & our website www.swangponycentre.co.uk. If you would like to attend any of the events, all bookings to be made online via our website.
If you would like to become a Pony Club Member, application forms can be downloaded from our website or the official Pony Club website www.pcuk.org. Membership has many benefits, including riders insurance, achievement badges, progressive rider tests (assessed during lessons), rallies, team show jumping, summer camp. For more information regarding the Pony Club please visit their website or ask a member of staff.
Swang Pony Centre ‘Helper’s Awards’ are designed to encourage helpers to develop increasing competence in assisting before, during & after lessons, also promote a growing awareness of Health & Safety around the yard. There are 3 awards starting with Bronze (min 10 years), Silver (min 12 years) & Gold (min 14 years) Helper’s will work towards the levels by completing a log book of hours & a final assessment by one of our qualified instructors. On completion of each award there is a reward of a medal & a free riding lesson. Gold Awards will also achieve a ‘SPC helpers’ T Shirt. For more information please see the notices in the tack room, viewing gallery or ask your instructor.
All riders at SPC have the opportunity to compete in the monthly Interdressage online competition, this is an excellent opportunity to start competing & win rosettes / certificates & prize money. Classes are suitable for all abilities, either dressage, jumping, or other fun classes. Riders are filmed during their lessons (no need to wear formal show gear riders just need to be of smart appearance) & the videos are uploaded to Youtube to be judged by Interdressage. Riders received a score sheet with helpful tips / comments. It is a great learning tool & the chance to compete against riders from around the world. For more information please ask your instructor & have a look at the website
If you have access to Facebook, please request Swang Pony Centre as a friend, for online news & details of our events. Please do not be offended if you friend request individual staff & are declined. All of our staff have to adhere to Safeguarding Policies.
If you need to contact us to rearrange a lesson, please contact the riding school phone 07835 579960, either by voice call or text. If no one is available to answer your call, please leave a voice message & we will return your call at our earliest convenience. We are unable to accept messages via messenger as we do not always receive them in time as the internet signal is weak in the yard!
Many of our visitors like to bring treats for the ponies, please note we do NOT allow our ponies to be fed from the hand, as this encourages ponies to bite! If you want to give your favourite pony a treat, please ask an instructor or helper for a bucket & they will assist you.
We hope you enjoy your time at Swang Pony Centre & if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask any of the instructors, we are happy to help .
